Abstract
The purpose of this article is to select the most typical cases with which we can examine idea of peace in the ancient times and the medieval times of the West and investigate the context where the terms appeared and their meaning in those days. And with this, the study intends to figure out their diverse efforts to build up peace from the ancient Greek till Rome and medieval times and the characteristics of them fragmentarily. Along with this, the paper also aims to examine how the contemporaries defined peace and how they tried to realize it and also what kind of gap existed between ideology of peace and its practice. The aspiration for peace that penetrated the ancient times and medieval times of the West was revealed as attempts to build up a variety of peace systems. People in Greece tried to build up peace by forming an alliance, but it was hard to adjust different interests conflicting among the member nations of the alliance, and there was confrontation between Athens and Sparta aiming for hegemony, so peace was always being provisional. Rome employing the alliance system successfully did succeed in founding the great empire using the alliance system; however, ‘Roman peace’ was grounded on the superiority of power, so the military and war kept being necessary. The peace movement of the medieval times led by the bishops as well as religious institutions did gain fruition by reducing the violence partly. But they did not deny violence or war entirely, so what they could do was just calming down excessive violence. The Pope and the kings of European countries did try to advocate the Crusades by using the energy of the peace movement or take it as a chance to strengthen centralistic power. In fact, diverse terms that mean peace imply different context and meaning. What are referred to as ‘peace’ are not all peace. The peace that was attempted to be realized in this world before the modern times was limited ‘closed peace’ that was confined in limited space and time. Outside the specific area where peace was commonly used, violence did rule the world. Even though concepts that meant ‘civil peace’ or ‘public peace’ also appeared, they were not able to think it could possibly be realized universally.
