Abstract

The early to middle period of the Joseon Dynasty was a turning point for the poetry school from the Song Dynasty to the Tang Dynasty. The attitude of Korean poets towards the debate between Li Bai and Du Fu is an important indicator of the aesthetic changes of the times. In the early period of the dynasty, the Song Dynasty trend since Goryeo was followed, and Du Fu was revered as an authentic poet. The representative figure of the Daoist school, Nan Xiaowen, and the representative figure of the Cizhang school, Xu Juzheng, all respected Du. The opposition between the two factions is actually a reflection of the political struggle between the old and the scholars in literature. Led by Confucianism, the Korean poetry discourse deviates from the standard of moral poetry and excessively amplifies the social function of poetry. In the middle of the dynasty, the impact of Buddhism and Taoism on the theory of sexuality pushed for a shift in the aesthetic of the times, and Li and Du, who revered the prosperous Tang Dynasty, became a symbol of the prevailing trend of Tang Buddhism. Liang Qingyu and Li Zhi, based on their works themselves, emphasized the importance of law and insisted on using Du poetry as a model for future generations to learn from. Liu Mengyin, Li Suguang, and Shen Qin valued the talent of writers, opposed carving, and vigorously praised Li Bai's poetic achievements. The attitude of Korean poetry and discourse has changed from universal respect for Du to the combination of Li and Du, reflecting a major turning point in literary aesthetic tendencies from valuing the beauty of craftsmanship and maturity to valuing the beauty of freshness and nature, and from valuing hard work to valuing the talent of refinement and enlightenment.
