Abstract
This study aims to analyze the concept of Hongkongness and the representation of Hong Kong women in the film A Simple Life by Hong Kong female director Ann Hui. Accordingly, it examines how Ann Hui’s work reflects Hong Kong society and culture. The film A Simple Life delicately portrays intergenerational relationships, caregiving labor, and the lives of elderly women within the context of traditional family structures and modern societal changes. This study explores the representation of Hongkongness in the film through spatial, cultural, and social elements, with particular emphasis on the contrast between residential spaces and urban landscapes, linguistic diversity, shifting family structures, and elderly care issues. Furthermore, it investigates the portrayal of women in the film from the perspectives of traditional female identity and autonomous female identity. By analyzing A Simple Life, this study seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of the unique cultural characteristics and social significance of Hong Kong cinema, particularly regarding how women’s roles are shaped and transformed within a changing Hong Kong society. Additionally, it aims to expand the discourse on Hongkongness by examining how women’s lives and identities are reconstructed within Hong Kong’s historical and political context.
