Abstract
This study focuses on analyzing the foreign words found in Western travelogues during the late Qing period (late 19th century), examining how Chinese intellectuals perceived and adopted Western cultural elements. During that time, due to frequent interactions and conflicts with Western powers, new science, technology, and institutional systems were rapidly introduced. Consequently, the Chinese language, based on Chinese characters, experienced a process of absorbing and transforming various foreign words. This transformation is revealed through various translation strategies such as transliteration, semantic translation, and mixed translation, providing important insights into the distinctly Chinese approach to interpreting and culturally adapting Western phenomena.
