This research aims to examine how the “extra-market resources” can help sustain or improve the “well-beings” of low-income households, especially landless farmers, in the rural northeast Thailand. Under the conditions such as limited cash-income, many low-income households would face difficulties when they try procuring enough goods and services through market transactions only. This research focuses not only on the tangible assets or “what they have” but also on their “capabilities”, i.e., the ability to generate more “utilities” from what they possess. This research describes formation of “community groups” as a case of enhancement of “capabilities”. By focusing on the workings of social relationship called “yart-sanit” or “close relatives”, this research assesses: 1) why they have turned conventional social relations into community-groups; 2)the degree to which the community-groups help reduce the cost of procuring goods and services for the villagers; and 3)who can and cannot benefit from this extra-market resources.
