초록
In this paper、 I investigate the contemporary construction of gender in South Korea and its possibilities for transformation through new media like the internet and television. As a case study、 I consider an exception to the traditional role of middle aged women: the hasukchip、 or boarding house proprietor. I conclude that the main historical factors in the construction of Korean gender are the centuries of institutional Confucian patrilineage、 and the psychological handling of Korean nationalist and modernization movements during and in response to the Japanese colonial period. I identify the hasukchip as a unique site of exception to this role because of its atypical material circumstances. Finally、 I consider the media (online communities and television dramas) as an important influence on female self perception with the potential for both creative liberation and reinforcing of restrictive social archetypes.
