Abstract

This paper focuses on the identity of Confucian scholars in the Tokugawa period, taking up the discourses related to their behavior on the deathbed as Confucian scholars and their practice of Confucian funeral rites. The paper considers the implementation of Confucian funeral rites as one of the Confucian practices as it relates to their identity, and clarifies their ritual practices related to Confucian funeral rites. The case of Nakamura Tekisai, who, as a Confucian scholar, attempted to follow the Confucian rite of death at the time of his own death, is discussed. He also discussed how Confucianists perceived Confucian funeral rites and " visiting the grave" in the climate and customs of the Tokugawa society during the Tokugawa period, when Buddhist funeral rites were becoming more prevalent. In this way, it became apparent that not only "learning" Confucianism, but also clarifying how Confucianism was made one's own is useful information for examining the significance of possessing such specialized knowledge and one's identity as a specialist.
