Abstract
The economic skeleton of neoliberalism has emerged in the guise of culture. For a long time, Christianity tried to keep a distance from neoliberalism. However nowadays church has showed intimate point of view on the consumerism of the postmodern culture. Consumerism made an appearance on the basis of amalgam of two factors: the exploiting economic ideology of neoliberalism and the image-centered culture of postmodernism. There are three devastating elements of consumerism on Christianity: first, consumerism turns God's graceful gift into merchandise for exchange, second, consumerism gets rid of communal ethics and instills speculative values in life-style, third, it manipulates churches as markets. When churches become markets, Jesus is degraded as a brand, and worship and pastoral programs of church are distorted as marketing strategies. In consumerist churches, Gospel turns into goods, preaching becomes an advertising method, and worship changes into a spectacular event. In addition, as pastoral ministry is stuck in the frame of marketing, congregation are forced to be servants for other consumers instead of the Kingdom of God. However consumer-christians generously and instinctively understand the consumerist context of church. There are not conceptual conflicts between a Jesus brand and a designer product in consumer- christians' spiritual life. To satisfy consumer-worshipers' religious feeling, churches prepare comfortable chairs and cozy places and provide worshipers with splendid or serene worship ambience. In the consumerist culture, Churches seem to lose any critical view against commercial spirituality since the grand discourse of the consumerist culture has consumed Gospel and set consumers with purchasing power on the throne.
