Abstract

This paper provides an overview of research trends surrounding Japanese marriage migrant women in Korea up to June 2025 and discusses the associated assignments. As a result of the survey, 162 papers were identified. Based on their titles, keywords, and content, the papers were categorized into six groups: first, general aspects of Japanese marriage migrant women’s lives in Korea; second, heritage language education for their children; third, Naiseon marriages (marriages between Japanese and Koreans); fourth, conflicts related to historical issues; fifth, language adaptation; and sixth, other topics. Furthermore, in order to grasp the overall research trends, an organized analysis was conducted on the timing of the studies, the researchers involved, the languages used, research methods and scales, and the keywords employed. The findings reveal that the issues surrounding Japanese marriage migrant women are complex and varied. Although various studies have been conducted, there is a recognized need for more layered and multifaceted research. Many papers mention the influence of historical issues as a background to the conflicts these women experience in Korean society, showing characteristics that distinguish them from marriage migrants from other countries. While four challenges in current research were identified, it is hoped that further development of research on Japanese marriage migrant women will continue as a step toward Korea’s progression into a mature multicultural society.
