Abstract
This study investigates strategies to promote public environmental behavior in addressing the microplastic issue by exploring the interactions between cultural cognition types and cognitive and emotional factors, including risk perception, psychological distance, and negative emotions concerning microplastics. The aim of the research is to elucidate the direct and indirect effects of cultural cognition types on public environmental behavior and, based on this, propose effective communication strategies to facilitate behavioral change. A survey of 1,000 Korean adults aged 19 and over was conducted, and data were analyzed using structural equation modeling and hierarchical regression analysis. The results demonstrate that hierarchical cognition significantly influences environmental behavior through risk perception, psychological distance, and negative emotions. In contrast, among the cognitive and emotional factors, only negative emotions exert a significant indirect effect between individualistic cognition and environmental behavior. These findings suggest the need to design tailored communication strategies that consider diverse factors, including public perceptions and emotional responses, in order to foster meaningful behavioral change on environmental issues. Based on these insights, this study offers strategic implications for enhancing the acceptance of environmental policies and promoting sustainable environmental behaviors.
