「보성론」에 나타난 종성의 성격

초록

본고는 현존하는 산스크리트본 「보성론」을 중심으로 하여, 거기에 나타난 종성 개념이 무위에 속하는가 혹은 유위에 속하는가 하는 점을 중점적으로 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 먼저 다카사키 지키도, 오가와 이치죠, 특히 야마베가 주장하는 여래장 사상의 종성무위론을 살펴본 결과, 적어도 「보성론」 자체의 맥락에서는 그러한 주장에 대한 근거가 없음을 확인하였다. 다음으로 RGV 전체에서 종성이라는 단어가 나타나는 부분을 살펴보고 「보성론」 자체의 종성 개념의 성격을 확정하고자 하였다. 그중 먼저 여래장의 3자성과 관련된 27송과 28송, 그리고 149-152송의 종성 개념, 특히 후자의 경우는 세 가지 불신의 원인으로만 규정된다는 것을 확인하였다. 종성 개념의 성격을 확인할 수 있는 구체적 언급은 여래장의 3자성 중 종성을 설명하는 부분이 아니라, 10의 중 작용을 설명하는 40-41송 부분에서 나타난다. 그곳에서 종성은 윤회의 고통을 혐오하고 열반의 즐거움을 바라는 보편적 심리의 근거, 혹은 더 나아가 3승의 가르침 중 하나에 대한 믿음으로 표현되고 있다. 이러한 언급들로부터 판단할 때 적어도 현존하는 산스크리트본 「보성론」에서는 종성을 무위로 간주할 어떤 명시적인 근거도 확인할 수 없었다. 종성을 무위로 볼 것인가 혹은 유위로 볼 것인가 하는 문제는 그것을 소연연(ālambanapratyaya)으로 간주할 것인가 혹은 인연(hetupratyaya)으로 간주할 것인가 하는 문제와 관련되어 있다. 이제까지 살펴보았듯이 RGV는 종성을 인연으로 간주한 것으로 보인다. 이는 사실상 유가행파의 입장과 궤를 같이 하는 것이다.

Abstract

The The purpose of this paper is to examine whether the concept of gotra belongs to samskṛta or asaṃskṛta, with special reference to the extant sanskrit Ratnagotravibhāga (RGV). First, I examined Yamabe’s opinion that gotra of Tathāgatagarbha thought belongs to asaṃskrṭa, and refuted his view because there is clear evidence that can prove Yamabe’s argument at least in the extant sanskrit RGV. Next, I investigated all the sentences of the RGV in which the term gotra is found, and tried to confirm whether gotra belongs to samskṛta or asamskṛta. In k.27-28 and k.149-152 the term gotra is just described as a cause to attain the three buddhakāya especially in k.149-152. Significant and concrete passages are found in k.40-41 and their commentaries which explain the fourth aspect, viz. karma of ten aspects of Tathagatagarbha. According to the passages, gotra is defined as a basis for the general emotions that hatred the duhkha of samsara and want the sukha of nirvana, and furthermore as a belief in one of the doctrines of the 3 yanas, viz. śrāvaka, pratyekabuddha, and bodhisattva. Judging from k.40-41 and their commentaries, there is no definite evidence which can prove that gotra belongs to asaṃskṛta in extant sanskrt RGV. This could mean that the concept of gotra of Tathāgatagarbha thought belongs to asaṃskṛta in accordance with Yogacaras which considers gotra as samskṛta and hetupratyaya.
