Abstract
This research attempts to develop an alternative index of population aging by combining characteristics approach and prospective age perspective. As fertility and mortality declined persistently, population aging in Korea has proceeded rapidly and raised societal concerns. Most discussions focus on changes in age structure, leading to catastrophic views dominating discourses. In this study, I attempt to develop an alternative index of population aging that accounts for socioeconomic development and inequality. I found the followings. First, educational differentials in mortality tend to increase but 2020 was an exception because of rise in mortality among highly educated old women. Second, age when remaining life expectancy equals 15 years(RLE15x) tended to increase and educational differentials in mortality persisted. Third, while the life course ratio based on chronological age increased, the prospective age life course ratio tended to decrease. This shows that the share of old age in life course did not increase when we account for improvement in health. Both life course ratios are higher for the better educated than the less educated. Finally, proportion old and the share of the less educated among the old was lower in prospective age approach than chronological age approach. The results show that population aging proceeds slower than most discussions assume and trends differ by educational attainment.
