Abstract

Measuring the aging of a country's population is important for forming that country's social awareness of demographic trends. Aging indicators based on fixed ages have played a large role in easily depicting demographic changes, but some of them have contributed to making the perception of aging unrealistic. In this study, we explored the age and proportion of the elderly population by referring to the relative age of each individual in Korea's population distribution. In this study, we first briefly described how to apply the optimal grouping technique to the age distribution, and calculated an invariant aging index (61 years old rather than 65 years old in 2020) in relation to the proportional readjustment of Korea's population distribution. According to this methodology, the general claim about Korea's population aging is clearly supported, and the proportion of the elderly population in the total population increased significantly from 2003 to 2020. The results of this analysis confirmed the results of previous research that reevaluated the existing rapid aging phenomenon and made it more objective. Accordingly, we suggest important implications for Korea's aging policy.
