Abstract

This paper examines the content, structure, source maps, and production background of the manuscript map set of China by Sonam Yun Dong-gyu, currently housed at the Jangseogak Archives of the Academy of Korean Studies. The study concludes that Yun Dong-gyu’s map set was modeled on the “Guangyutu” type maps, with particular reference to the “ZengDingGuangYuJi” version, published by Yijingtang in early Qing and now preserved at the Library of Congress. As a key figure within the Seongho School, Yun Dong-gyu engaged in close scholarly exchange with intellectuals such as Yi Ik and An Jeong-bok, facilitating active map exchange and reproduction. His map set was created within this rich intellectual context. Additionally, it reconstructs the transmission and circulation of the Chinese “Guangyutu” type maps in Joseon. According to the “Heainan Yun Clan Collection Catalog,” the revised 1561 edition of the “Guangyutu” by Hu Song was introduced to Joseon before 1722. Furthermore, from the early 17th to the late 19th century, at least 14 types of “Guangyutu” type maps or geographic texts were transmitted to Joseon by envoys traveling to Beijing. Among these, the earliest “Guangyutu” type maps collections and geographical works to arrive in Joseon included the renowned “Sanjae Dohwae” and the Ming version of the “Guangyuji,” which attracted significant attention among Korean intellectuals. This study examines Yun Dong-gyu’s map set and the transmission of China's "Guangyutu" to Joseon from the perspectives of cartography and Sino-Korean cultural exchanges in mapmaking. However, the analysis of the reproduction and production processes of the map set, the exchange of maps and geographical knowledge within the Seongho School in the mid-18th century, and the changes in geographical perception of Joseon intellectuals reflected in the reproduction and transformation of the “Guangyutu” lineage maps has not been sufficiently conducted. These aspects remain as tasks for future research.
