In Korean history studies, Discussion of sexuality has been argued on two hypothesis. It is first, historical concept hypothesis that the concept of sexuality as a general idea is been years for long time in korea, and second, repressive hypothesis that sexuality has been suppressed. But the concept of sexuality has been a general idea invented by modern intellect in Japan who studied western sexology more than just 100 years ago. Furthermore, the belief that most of us are accustomed to, Korean society is conservative with sexuality under the influence of Confucian idea, is not also been historically proven. In this context, this study approached sexuality matter in korean history with a alternative concept, desire(慾) and the self-cultivation. Before the 20th century in Korea, the pre-modern concept of sexual desire, 情慾, implied the measure of Confucian self-cultivation. Confucian scholars had to manage desire well to verify oneself as a Confucian subject. Therefore, Pre-modern type of sexual desire had to be manipulated rather than negated. Scholars was bothered about distribution of sexual desire in daily life and public. Because the balance of given plural role, for example, as good head of household, good administration, loyal retainer, and great monarch, was important to be whole Confucian subject. On the other hand, western sexology and sexual pathology imported from Japan established new type idea about sexual desire (性慾) and criteria for cultivation in 20th Korean society. Modern sexual desire was conjugated as one of index to measure boundary between normality and abnormality, thus citizens had to cultivate thoughtfully own sexual desire and follow scientific guidelines about sexual desire not to be abnormal. More importantly, the overriding issue was that sexual desire must be considered in relationship between subject and others. Pre-modern Confucian Scholars cultivated one’s own desire only to be subject by oneself and the main strategy of cultivation is to concentrate not to lose oneself. On the other hand, Modern citizens had to control owns and others’ at the same time not to stimulate others’ desire. People had to act thoughtfully of others’ in public places, especially school and Parent also make effort carefully not to be exposed their desire in front of family, specially their children. In order to look deep in to Korean history with sexuality, this research reviewed genealogy of sexual desire and the cultivation rather than history of sexuality and repression. Nevertheless, this study could not trace specifically the strategies of cultivation with sexual desire. It is significant references that tactics of self-body and strategies to spatialize sexual desire in private and public spaces such as home, school, office or theater and stations. It will be revealed through following study.
