초록

The Munye(literature) was a literary magazine that is published before and after the Korean war. Editors of the magazine advocate the pure literature in Korean society, where political ideology affected the literary discourse after liberation. Various texts of the Magazine depict the contradictions between the literary goal and the political reality. Editors of the Munye appear the attitude emphasizes the literature should be distinguished from the politics, but their critics were closely related to the political power struggle. The problem is not only of the Munye because those contradictions are based on the reality of Korean literature. They have agonized with the identity of national literature since the colonial period. And the intricacy of national literature troubled until now when the nation stays as a divided one. The Munye had dealt with the complicated problems directly through the concept of pure literature. Since the purpose of pure literature is not about the nation but the universality, there are inevitable controversies in their arguments. Despite the editors are representative writers after liberation, their critics were considered as the vacant argument or nonsenses. It is because their literary theory is contradictory to their political attitude. Facing the contradictions of the pure literature theory in the 1950s, this article focused on the origin of their power in the literary discourse. And I explored the relationship after the Korean war between the cold war ideology and nationalism. Analyzing the texts of the Munye is important because they have revealed how the discourse of pure literature attains the legitimacy of national literature despite the numerous contradictions. We could understand the tensions between the anti-communism of the world and the nationalism of Korea with the texts on worldness and tradition. The Munye depicts the process of the goal of the nationalistic literary collude and conflict with the cold war ideology. Besides, these texts indicate the national literature in the 1950s established the validity of their theory with the attitude of criticism of modern civilization and the concept of tradition in the present. These discussions are based on the attention to global literature such as Lost generation writers in America, the existentialism of post-war, and the tradition theory of T. S. Eliot. Those western literary theories offered the solid foundation to overcome the modern civilization, and writers of the Munye suggest the new role of Korea for the next era in which the world could develop spiritual progress. They appropriate the prospect of the next era into the cold war system and confine the meaning of national progress as humanism, considering communists lost their humanities thus could not achieve their goal. Their perception of the worldness reveals the reality of the Cold War conflict. And, at the same time, it presents an important cognition that embodies the specificity of Korean society, which exists as an exception to the cold war system.

Abstract
