Abstract
Based on the entire collection of works included in Yanbian Literature and Art published in 1951, this paper examines the literary responses and perceptions of reality of the Yanbian Korean community toward ‘The War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea’. Furthermore, it examines the process by which the Korean community formed its identity as Chinese citizen and the atmosphere within its society at the beginning of the Cold War. Yanbian Literature and Art greatly reduced the number of works by Korean writers dealing with the front lines, and instead translated and published a large number of works by Han Chinese writers that portray the Korean people and the Korean People's Army and emphasize internationalism and the legitimacy of ‘The War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea’ to emphasize that ‘resisting America and aiding Korea’ is not just a mission of Koreans, but a common mission of all Chinese people, including Han Chinese and also to minimize the regional characteristics of Yanbian from being expressed as the ethnicity of Koreans. In addition, Yanbian Literature and Art accepted the counter-revolutionary repression from a literary perspective and sought to achieve class purification within the nation through separation and severance from South Korea, with which it was connected by blood, while at the same time promoting and propagating patriotism on a large scale. For the Korean-Chinese, whose ethnicity and nation were not the same, patriotism, that is, love for the nation, had to transcend ethnicity, and for the sake of the nation, bloodlines had to be something they could give up. The works that literaryize the Patriotic Production Increase Movement occupy the largest portion of Yanbian Literature and Art, and the discourse on social mobilization of the Patriotic Production Increase Movement in these works is largely composed of two internal logics. One logic is to call up the memories of past suffering and joint resistance against Japanese imperialism under Japanese imperialism, and to repel American invasion and secure victory in the war through the Patriotic Production Increase Movement in order to protect present-day happiness. The other logic is to mobilize labor to devote all strength and passion to production in order to protect the homeland and win the war.
