Abstract
This study aims to investigate the publication status of Zhuge Liang’s Simseo (心書, The Heart Book) during the Joseon Dynasty, a topic that has been largely unexplored in Korean academia. To this end, this research examines the bibliographic information and publication contexts of four extant Joseon editions: the Gug-an Temple (國安寺) edition, the Military Training Command (訓鍊都監, Hullyeondogam) edition, the Office of Publications (校書館, Gyoseogwan) edition, and the edition included in the Baekga Ryuchan (百家類纂, Compendium of the Hundred Schools). These versions were analyzed by comparing their content and structure with the modern standard text, Zhang Shu's (張澍) Jegal Chungmuhu Munjip (諸葛忠武侯文集, The Collected Works of Zhuge Liang). The results confirm that the circulation of the Simseo in Joseon was not limited to a single textual tradition; rather, at least two distinct and heterogeneous editions circulated in a complex manner. Notably, the Gug-an Temple edition, published in 1572, was based on a now-lost early Ming Dynasty text, demonstrating unique characteristics that clearly distinguish it from later editions. The primary significance of this study lies in demonstrating that Joseon intellectuals and military leaders actively embraced the Simseo for its practical value, despite being aware of its apocryphal nature. The Simseo was published and circulated in various forms to meet contemporary needs, serving either as a military manual for strengthening national defense or as a work of scholarly learning. This serves as a significant case study illustrating a facet of Joseon’s intellectual history that prioritized pragmatism over nominal justification.
