PC는 미디어 지형에서 어떤 역할을 담당하고 있는 것일까? 본 논문은 관심과 연구의 대상에서 소외된 PC의 기능과 정체성 변화를 이론적으로 설명하고 나아가 이를 시 계열조사 자료를 통해 확인하고자 하였다. 이론적으로 이 논문은 미디어 지형 변화 속에서 PC가 이른바 ‘기능적 재조직화(functional reorganization)’를 통해 업무용 도구 로 정체성 변화를 겪고 있다고 본다. 이런 정체성 변화를 PC의 재도구화라 부르고, 이런 변화의 양상을 경험적으로 확인하기 위해 시계열 자료인 KISDI 한국미디어패 널조사의미디어이용행태자료를통해미디어기능목록별이용시간의분포를시 계열적으로 확인했다. 그 결과, 미디어 활용 차원에서 PC 기능의 다양성은 감소하였 고 업무 기능의 집중도 지수와 구성비 지수만이 지속적으로 증가하였다. PC 중심 이용자 집단 역시 집단별 다양성은 감소하고 대졸 사무직 남성과 같은 특정 집단으로의 집중도 지수가 지속적으로 증가한 것으로 나타났다.
Abstract
What role does the PC play in the media topography? This paper presents a theoretical description of changes in the function and identity of the PC, which has been largely overlooked in research, and verifies the findings using time series data. Amidst changes in the media topography, the PC is undergoing “functional reorganization” and embracing its new identity as an instrument for work. This change in identity is called the re- instrumentalization of the PC, and time series data provided by KISDI was used for empirical analysis. First, this study determined the time series distribution of usage time by media function list. Second, the reduced functional utilization was studied in relation to the phenomenon of “user isolation,” that is, the heavy use of a specific function by a certain user group. Lastly, the implications and significance of this study were briefly discussed.
