Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between question types and scientific problem-solving skills among elementary school students in science classes utilizing generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI). To achieve this, the study was conducted with 24 sixth-grade students from two elementary schools in the Chungcheong province region. The study involved two instructional sequences: a three-session regular curriculum lesson on ’Combustion and Extinguishing’ from the second semester of the sixth grade and a three-session lesson on ’Identifying Different Types of Salt Using Gen AI’. Data were collected from various sources, including elementary science lesson materials using Wrtn, students’ worksheets, dialogue log texts between students and Wrtn, the field notes of the teacher conducting the lessons, and experimental videos. The data analysis was conducted using a question-type analysis framework and a problem-solving evaluation rubric. Cases were selected from each lesson topic, distinguishing between students who demonstrated high levels of scientific problem-solving skills and those who did not, to examine the relationship between question types and problem-solving abilities. The findings indicate that students who exhibited a greater diversity of question types tended to adopt a more multifaceted approach to problem-solving and demonstrated higher achievement levels in the scientific problem-solving evaluation rubric. Conversely, students with a more limited range of question types showed lower problem-solving performance. This study suggests that interactions with Gen AI can positively contribute to the scientific problem-solving process in elementary science education. Furthermore, it highlights the potential of Gen AI in supporting technology-based elementary science education.
