Abstract

This article examines the true identity of maek-guk(貊國) as recorded in the shuowenjiezi(說文解字), which was compiled around 100 AD. The shuowenjiezi notes that bi-hyu(貔) and seon-eo(鮮魚) were the specialties of maek-guk. Given that the text generally uses specific regional names when mentioning local products, it can be inferred that maek-guk also refers to a specific political entity. Because the official name which was exchanged with the han(漢) at the time, was “goguryeo”, maek-guk in the shuowenjiezi cannot be equated with goguryeo. Considering that the term ye-maek was frequently used to describe the ye people around the 2nd century, and that the shuowenjiezi itself uses the combined term ye-maek regarding matters of food and clothing, the maek-guk appears to have been a power adjacent to the ye. In the gyeonggi, gangwon, and chungbuk regions, several place names ending in the form of “-mae(買)” are found. In these areas, “mae” seems to have been used as a common noun meaning a certain unit of territory. The word is the most pronounced with maek(貉) among the many words that used to refer to barbarians outside them in china. From this perspective, it appears that the powers in the central region of the korean peninsula came to be called maek-guk because “mae” which were used in this region, sounded similar to the chinese character maek(貉). The bi-hyu mentioned as a specialty of maek-guk is a leopard-like predator; leopards and tigers were abundant in the hamgyong and gangwon regions, which can be considered the ye-maek area. Seon-eo appears to be a type of fish introduced to china through joseon-hyeon. Cold-water fish caught off the east coast, such as trout, could not be found in the central plains of china, On the other hand, since the river in the goguryeo region leads to liaodong-gun, the fish living in goguryeo can be known as the specialty of liaodong. This further makes it is difficult to say that, in the shuowenjiezi goguryeo was written as maek-guk. Meanwhile, the reason these animals with wide habitats were known as specialties of maek-guk is likely that they were first gathered in maek-guk before being traded with lelang. A significant number of lelang’s artifacts are being discovered along the east coast of gangwon and the bukhan-river area, including chuncheon. This suggests the existence of a trade route leading from the yeongdong region through the bukhanr-river area to lelang. Since a political entity known as maek-guk had existed in the central region since at least the 1st century AD, records regarding maek-guk or the maek people have been preserved in historical texts.
