Abstract
The Koguryo people acquired meat food through hunting and livestock rearing. To the Koguryo people, hunting was directly linked to their lives as they had to supplement insufficient food with animals through activities such as hunting. Although the Koguryo people did hunting themselves, they also used livestock including horses and dogs. Various types of hunting appearing on ancient tomb murals were done with horses, and hunting dogs on the murals prove that development of hunting and that of livestock rearing were realized simultaneously. Among livestock of Koguryo, cows used in farming played a great role as a draft animal, but they were also used in a memorial ceremony as sacrificial goods for integrating the Koguryo people. Horses were reared as the means for war, and pigs were reared as the main livestock with cows and horses by the Koguryo people. Pigs, like cows, were used as sacrificial goods for sacrificial food, and looking at the role of pigs in a memorial ceremony for transfer of the capital, it is thought that the importance of pig rearing must have been high in Koguryo. Cows and pigs offered as sacrificial goods in various memorial ceremonies may have been provided for those participating in the ceremonies. Offering up sacrificial goods in a memorial ceremony and sharing them was to unify with god and share a common purpose. This was an act to foster homogeneity and cohesiveness. The meat food that the Koguryo people shared in Dongmaeng(東盟) that was held every October as a dynastic grand convention may have been a special memory to them, and it is thought that they confirmed their common synesthesia in a gustatory level. However, the meat food of Koguryo could not be largely enjoyed by the Koguryo people. The reason was found via the name of a tomb of an owner of ancient tomb murals in Deokheung-ri(德興里). As the meat food was even recorded on the name of a tomb, it is thought that the Koguryo people could enjoy meat food only on special days such as the day of dynastic grand convention or at village community parties. In conclusion, it was found that the meat food of Koguryo was closely related to the lifestyle and the production method of the Koguryo people. The Koguryo people must have celebrated special days with meat food and enjoyed it. They felt a sense of unity through a memorial ceremony, enjoyed the delight of marriage, and showed off their richness and high position by eating meat food. This indicates that they not only ate meat food but used it to expand production, develop hunting skills and military techniques, and consumed it as economic goods to pay for opportunity costs.
