홍익인간은 고조선의 건국이념으로 전해지고, 또한 대한민국 교육법이 정한 현대 교육의 기본이념이기도 하다. 한국 최초의 국가를 세운 조상들이 단군신화를 만들고, 거기서 홍익인간 이념도 출현했다. 그것은 고대인의 상상세계가 만들어낸 이야기지만, 수천 년의 세월을 거치면서 변경되고 복잡해졌고, 현재에도 ‘살아있는 이야기’로 받아들여진다. 신화는 선사시대에 이미 생겨난 이야기부터 각 시대마다 변형된 이야기들을 더하고 빼며 진화해왔다. 홍익인간이 고대 한국에서 사람을 도와 인간세계를 확충하려는 하느님의 의지나 명령이었다면, 중세에는 인간에 대한 교화 및 치화의 이념으로 변경되었고, 근자에 다시 인간을 널리 이롭게한다는 근대의 이념으로 진화했다. 그 신화가 여러 시대의 정치가와 역사가에게 영향을 주고, 민속과 종교에 중요한 요소가 되고, 홍익인간이 현대 교육의 기본이념이 될 정도로 한국 문화 전반에 큰 영향을 끼쳤다. 이 글은 고대부터 근대까지 홍익인간 이념이 진화한 연대기를 고찰하고, 그 토대에서 홍익인간을 재발견한 근대의 사상적 문법을 논구한다. 특히 조소앙이 삼균사상으로 홍익인간을 해석하여 통일국가건설과 세계일가 이상 실현의 최고공리로 삼은 사례에 주목하고, 그와 전병훈 철학의 유사성을 시론적으로 살핀다.
Abstract
Hongikingan(弘益人閒) was the founding ideology of ancient Joseon(古朝鮮), and it is also the basic philosophy of modern education set by the Korean Education Law. The ancestors who established Korea's first nation created Dangun mythology, and the Hongikingan also emerged. It is a story created by the imaginary world of ancient people, but it has been changed and complicated over thousands of years and is still accepted as a living story. Hongikingan was God's will or command to expand man's world by helping people in the early Korean nation. In the Middle Ages, it changed to the idea of enlightenment and rehabilitation of human beings. In modern times, it has evolved into a modern ideology that benefits humans widely. These myths influenced politicians and historians of many ages, became important elements in folklore and religion, and had a great influence on Korean culture as a whole. This paper examines the evolution of the Hongikingan ideology from ancient times to modern times, and explores the modern philosophical grammar that rediscovers Hongikingan, In particular, noticed the case that Jo So-Ang interpreted Hongikingan as an egalitarianism, and discuss the parallels between it and Jeon Byung-hoon's philosophy.
