1949년에 제정되어 공포된 한국의 교육법은 ‘홍익인간’을 교육이념으로 명시하고 있다. ‘홍익인간’은 국조(國祖) 단군이야기에 나오는 것으로 한국인이 이상(理想)으로 생각한 사람과 세상의 모습을 보여준다. 본 논문은 단군신화의 ‘홍익인간’ 이념이 대한민국의 교육이념으로 채택되는 과정과 의의를 살펴 보았다. 나아가 홍익인간 사상이 지닌 이상적 인간상과 홍익인간 교육이 추구하는 인간의 자질을 분석하였고 한국 교육의 지향처를 탐색하였다. 사회 구성원을 건강하게 길러내는 것이 교육의 기능이라면 어떤 인물로 만들어 내는 가는 교육의 이념에 달려있다. 홍익인간 이념을 전하는 단군신화의 내용은 간략하지만 그 안에 담겨있는 고대인들, 조상들의 마음은 깊고도 넓다. 그들이 원했던 사람과 세상의 모습을 다 알아내기 힘들 정도이다. 제한적이나마 이상적 인간형과 추구했던 자질들을 탐색해 보았다. 홍익인간의 이념은 ‘지금, 여기에서 모든 존재를 포용하고 모든 경우와 공존하여 공동체를 행복으로 이끌어 주는 사람’을 이상형으로 설정했음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 그러한 인간의 자질은 ‘꿈을 지니고, 자발적으로, 그 꿈에 도달하고 완성하는 과정을 지속적으로 추구해 가는 열정’임을 보았다. 따라서 홍익인간 교육이념의 지향처는 ‘공동체를 생각하고 남을 배려하며 내가 가진 것을 나누어 도울 줄 아는 인간의 완성’이라고 하겠다.
Abstract
The education law of Korea enacted and proclaimed in 1949 clarifies that the idea of hongik in'gan lies at the root of the educational thoughts in Korea. The idea of hongik in'gan, introduced in the myth of Dan’gun, the founding father of Korea, features the people and the world idealized by the Koreans. This paper has examined the meaning and the origin of the idea of hongik in'gan in the myth of Dan’gun from a philosophical perspective and has searched for the process, as well as the significance, of how the idea has been adopted as the educational thoughts of Korea. It has also analyzed ideal human characters based on the hongik in'gan thoughts and the desirable human qualifications pursued by the educational thoughts of hongik in'gan, while at the same time searching for the future direction of education in Korea. If the function of education is to cultivate the healthy members of society, what kind of people we can produce depends on the idea of education. Socialist countries and democratic nations cultivate the great minds of their own, respectively. Only their respective ideologies－socialism and democracy－are different. The myth of Dan’gun, which deals with the idea of hongik in'gan, is short but the mind of the ancient people, or the Korean ancestors, is wide and deep. It is even hard to fathom the reality of the world idealized by the forebears. Though in a limited scale, this paper has examined the ideal human characters and their qualities. It is understood that the idea of hongik in'gan defined the ideal people as “those who can embrace all existences here and now and lead the community members to enjoy happiness in coexistence with all circumstances.” This paper has also found that those qualities can translate into “passions with which people have dreams and voluntarily make efforts to realize and accomplish them with persistence.” In conclusion, the aim of the educational thoughts of hongik in'gan is “to successfully cultivate the people who can care for others in consideration of the community and can help others by sharing something necessary with them.”
