Abstract
This article aims at introducing the Research on the History of Foreign Relations in the Late Goguryeo Period (『고구려 후기 대외관계사 연구』) by Kim Jinhan and evaluating its place and meaning in the history of historiography. This book stipulates that the late Goguryeo period is from the reign of King Jangsu of 5th century to 668 when Goguryeo fell, and analyzes the international relations of East Asia during this period from the perspective of Goguryeo. The core argument of the book is that foreign relations are an extension of the domestic politics. Considering that the current research of international relations tends to criticize and overcome the Theory of an East Asian World started from Nishijima Sadao, the book also shares the trend in two aspects. The first is to broaden the perspective of international relations beyond East Asia, which was limited to the movement of the Hexi Corridor, to the Eurasian Steppe such as Rouran and Turks. The second aspect is that ancient East Asia is interpreted as a pluralistic world, rather than as a unitary order of domination and subjugation which is Chinese-centered. However, this article raises question whether the only alternative to the Theory of an East Asian World should be a return to national history. The book uses the narrative structure of national history started from Lee Ki-baik to classify the period and organize the table of contents. Furthermore, the relationship between Buyeo, Kitan, Shiwei, Wuji, Gaya, which are excluded from or classified as the periphery of the modern national history system of Korea, China, and Japan, is roughly summarized. This narrative is in line with the Theory of East Asian World in that it assumes a unitary relationship between the center and the periphery for systematic structure and otherizes the periphery.
