Abstract

In order to build a methodological research for the study of the Old Choson’s boundary and material culture, this paper proposes ‘categorization of Old Choson’ and conceptual expansion of the culture of Mandolin-shaped bronze daggers as a system-theoretical culture and broad cultural sphere. This is part of the search to advance the debate on material culture and the territory of Old Choson, which is unacting, and to give credibility to the discussion of material culture by examining the outline range indicated by Old Choson. It is suggested that Puyeo 夫餘, Goguryeo 高句麗, Dongokjeo 東沃沮, and Ye 濊, which were in the Old Choson region and were viewed as similar or the same ethnic groups to the ancient Chinese, could be bounded into the category of Old Choson. In the case of material culture, it was suggested that the culture of Mondol-shaped bronze daggers could be viewed as a culture distributed from the Liaoxi 遼西 to the Korean peninsula including Jilin 吉林 - Chanchun 長春 area by reestablished archaeological culture as a system-theoretic concept. In the preliminary conclusion, I saw that there is a certain correlation between the categorized Old Choson and the conceptually expanded the Mondolin-shaped bronze dagger culture. Various regional types of the Mondolin-shaped bronze dagger culture, such as the type of Shiurdayingzi 十二臺營子 in Liaoning province and the type of Songgung-ni 松菊里 in the south-central part of the Korean Peninsula, can be investigated in terms of the interaction between Old Choson and its polities which are in.
