Abstract

This study compares and reviews the pit dwellings of Silla at Halmi Fortress and the Mabuk-dong settlement to explore the early phase of Silla’s expansion into the Han River Basin. By analyzing the location, overlapping patterns, and excavated artifacts of the Mabuk-dong site, this study infers construction periods, site characteristics, and the processes through which Silla occupied and reorganized the region. Before Silla’s advance, the Yongin area along the Tancheon Stream maintained a strong Baekje identity and functioned as a strategically significant region contested by the Three Kingdoms. Silla established fortresses, settlements, and tombs to consolidate territorial control, implementing not only military dominance but also political and social restructuring to integrate local communities. Most Silla pit dwellings were deliberately located to avoid preexisting Baekje houses, indicating a period of coexistence and suggesting that early occupation was not entirely coercive. The co-occurrence of Silla, Baekje, and Goguryeo artifacts at Mabuk-dong reflects cultural exchange among the Three Kingdoms and local adaptation processes, demonstrating that Silla incorporated regional social structures to stabilize newly acquired territories. Halmi Fortress functioned as a military and administrative center, overseeing tax collection, labor mobilization, and resource management, while Mabuk-dong served as a supporting hinterland, providing residential and production bases and facilitating material supply and administrative connectivity via road networks. Together, the two sites formed an integrated archaeological complex, illustrating Silla’s strategies of territorial governance, incorporation of subjugated populations, and regional social reorganization. This study provides key archaeological evidence for understanding the establishment of Silla’s local governance, social integration, and cultural adaptation in the Han River Basin during its early expansion phase.
