Abstract
This study approached the government regulation of gene editing technology in two ways, classified one into final product-based regulation and the other into process- based regulation, and measured attitudes toward them. In addition, to explain the difference in attitude, risk/benefit perception and a worldview based on Douglas & Wildavsky's (1982) cultural theory was applied. As a result of the analysis, the general public showed positive attitudes toward both final product-based deregulation and process-based deregulation in their attitude toward gene editing technology. As a result of multiple regression analysis, risk perception had a negative effect on the attitude toward deregulation, and benefit perception had a positive effect. However, the worldview did not support some of the results expected from the existing theoretical discussions. Through cluster analysis, attitudes toward the two types of regulation were divided into four clusters, and logistic regression analysis was conducted. Benefit perception and individualism as a worldview clearly differentiated the positive and negative attitudes toward the two deregulation. This study emphasized that the support of the general public can be influenced by differentiated factors depending on how deregulation measures are organized. Therefore, it is necessary to accurately grasp the situation that can induce public support when the government uses multiple regulatory-related measures in combination.
