Abstract
This study sought to examine the effects of material hardship on the academic achievement of high school students. With this goal in mind, it used the data from the Korea Welfare Panel Study [KOWEPS] and applied the propensity score weight on the OLS regression analysis. The main findings were as follows. First, households which received cash assistance lower than the median level from the National Basic Livelihood Security System(NBLSS) showed a higher probability of experiencing material hardship compared with their counterparts. Second, adolescents from the households which experienced more than 4 types of material hardship during the last 3 years showed lower levels of academic achievement. Third, while the negative effects of material hardship on the overall subjects and Korean were not found in the OLS regression analysis without a propensity score weight, these were found significant in the models where the propensity score weight method was applied.
