Abstract

Brands carries diverse meanings depending on the industry and consumption environment. In the fisheries sector, however, it is especially important for food safety, traceability, and the protection of intellectual property rights. However, brand development for agricultural and fishery products faces significant structural constraints compared to manufactured goods, and the unique characteristics of aquatic products render brand management even more challenging. As of 2005, Japan had approximately 350 regional seafood brands, while South Korea had only approximately 150. Moreover, most Korean seafood brands have been confined to simple brand name and logo development, lacking comprehensive, professional review. Therefore, this study focuses on Salmonid species, which have recently emerged as major products in the global seafood consumption trends. The primary goal is to analyze the current status and differentiation strategies in Japan, which has successfully established over 100 'Gotouchi Salmon' (ご当地サーモン: local specialty salmon) brands as a core initiative of its fisheries promotion policy. Japan’s Gotouchi Salmon branding initially aimed to replace imported sashimi-grade salmon and project the image of “delicious domestic salmon”. Despite numerous constraints, Japan adopted a differentiation strategy emphasizing the strengths of its domestic production: "high freshness and high quality." Consequently, over 100 regional Gotouchi Salmon brands were established by 2021, gaining attention as a strategy for local economic revitalization, differentiation from imports, and high-value creation. In contrast, South Korea's trout production is less than half that of Japan, with only one or two brands in existence. Although Japan and South Korea share similar inland aquaculture environments, Japan introduced the concept of “Market-in Aquaculture,” which focuses on consumer needs and sustainable growth. These outcomes provide meaningful implications for the development of South Korea's salmonid aquaculture industry. This study reviews the supply and demand trends of salmonids in Japan and derives the background, differentiation strategies, and future direction of the Gotouchi Salmon brands. Finally, based on the analysis, we present practical implications for domestic seafood branding, particularly for the development of the inland trout farming industry, along with research limitations and suggestions for future research.
