Abstract

The purpose of this research is to make clear how Japanese youth labor market have been changing and what social meaning it has today. To do this, I focused on the problems of ‘FURITA’, which means ‘free arbeiter’ in Japanese. It is well known that there are two factors that had supported high economic growth in Japan. Frist is the life-term employment. And the other is Japanese school/vocational selection system that make youths to transit from school to work directly, which has been supported by semi-formal or implicit contracts between specific employers and high school. High schools play a crucial rule in the transition of students to work. By increasing of the number of ‘FURITA’ from the late 1980s, Japanese vocational selection system is not going well any more. The problems of ‘FURITA’ do not mean just simple problems of youth labor market, but also it reveals the structure of social and gender inequality, and it represents coming of new social value against the traditional value system in Japanese school/employment system. Thus, we conclude that the problems of ‘FURITA’ are characterized by both limit of Japanese modernization and desire for social change.
