Abstract

A substantial number of today's church members are in their mid-lives. However, there has been very little study conducted on the characteristics of the mid-life church members. Subsequently, the church finds itself insufficiently prepared to create and administer a proper ministry program for these individuals. This thesis's goal is to propose an effective preaching ministry for the mid-life church member, which is based on a sound understanding of the psychological and sociological distinctions of the mid-life church individual. Mid-life period is the golden age of an individual, as well as a time of many changes and uncertainties for that person. Because of these uncertainties, many individuals in their mid-life attempt to seek new directions for their lives, a journey which often results in failure. Mid-life oriented preaching is one aspect of counseling preaching and usually involves biblical expository preaching. It may be defined as a method of preaching which is sensitive and receptive to the distinct psychological needs and experiences of the mid-life individual, and which effectively addresses those needs. The main issues that need to be addressed include the following; physical changes to the body, parenthood, marital relationships, occupation, heretical thought, a well balanced life, etc. To effectively administer a sermon oriented to mid-life audiences, the preacher's sermon must be solidly grounded on personal experience, be filled with conviction for the topic, and be integrally related to the life experiences the mid-life audience are facing. The sermon should apply apt use of personally touching anecdotes and stories, and in doing so, should exude a familiarity and intimacy that puts the mid-life audience at ease. The sermon should include a positive message, and should give the mid-life audience a route in which they may apply the sermon in tangible and practicable forms in their lives.
