Abstract

This study aimed to examine first-year university students’ perceptions of public speaking anxiety and to analyze gender differences, with a view to deriving implications for improving presentation instruction in secondary Korean language education. A survey was conducted with 266 first-year students enrolled at a university in the Chungcheong region, using the Speech Anxiety Thoughts Inventory (SATI) as the measurement tool. Descriptive statistics and independent samples t-tests were employed for data analysis. The results revealed that students perceived public speaking anxiety to stem more strongly from negative self-predictions about performance and a lack of sense of control than from fear of negative evaluation by the audience. In particular, anticipatory anxiety and the burden of responding spontaneously during presentations, such as worrying about being called upon to present or not being able to answer questions, were identified as major contributors. Gender analysis showed that female students reported significantly higher levels of performance-related anxiety than male students, especially in question-and-answer situations. These findings suggest the need to view public speaking anxiety not as an individual psychological problem but as a learning task that can be alleviated through educational support. This study offers meaningful implications for presentation education by highlighting the importance of emotional support, self-regulation strategy instruction, and opportunities for collaborative presentation experiences in secondary Korean language classrooms.
