Abstract

Misty poetry, which captivated an entire generation while simultaneously attracting both praise and envy, raises the question of whether it has indeed exhausted its vitality, as later generations have claimed. If such assertions are accepted, how are we to interpret the profound resonance and depth that misty poetry continues to evoke for us today, living as we do in a different historical moment and social reality? Further questions remain: what was the source of the power that once gripped a generation with awe and excitement, and what external and internal factors ultimately led to its withdrawal from the center of the literary stage? The answers to these questions, however, lie less in external definitions or evaluations of misty poetry than in the intrinsic particularities of misty poetry itself—those qualities that made such diverse interpretations possible. Accordingly, this paper seeks to outline the nature and characteristics of misty poetry in order to examine its historical significance and to propose its own responses to the questions raised above.
