Abstract
This study investigates the differences in the effects of family, school, and delinquent peers on delinquent behaviors and how they vary depending on the age of the youth Concerned. This paper also examines a number of hypotheses based on Thornberry’ Interactional Theory, employing the regulation effects analysis method upon structural equation model analysis. Data for each age population from 11 to 18 years old was taken from the elementary panel and middle panel conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute. The comparison of the effects by selected variables produced the following results. In the case of Korean youth, the effects of parental attachment on delinquency were higher in proportion to age, and the effects of parental attachment on delinquent peers were constant, both contradicting the hypothetic expectation. The effects of the parental effects upon school commitment were seen to decrease in proportion to age, supporting the corresponding hypothesis. The effects of the level of school commitment upon delinquency and delinquent peers were found only among the age population aged from 14 to 18 years old, partly supporting the corresponding hypothesis. The effects of the delinquent peers on delinquency showed a rapid increase at age 12, which then maintained a high level through to age 18. In addition, this study, being the first research exercise which investigated all age populations of Korean youth, uncovered a number of interesting facts. The most remarkable result of this study is that in the case of Korean juvenile delinquency, an opposition structure of family and delinquent peers is maintained amongst almost all age groups.
