Abstract

This study sought to investigate the effects of daily stress on depression amongst college students. It also attempted to test the buffering effect of social support in social network service on the relationship between daily stress and depression. This study focuses on the gender differences in its buffering effect which appear to be greater bigger in female students than in male students. Using data from 316 male and female college students, this study tests s number of hypotheses. The results indicate that the effect of daily stress on depression is significant in both male and female students and that the buffering effect of social support in social network service is significant in female but not in male students, even though its independent effect is not significantamongst both genders. That is, the interaction effect between daily stress and social support is significant in only female students, which supports the buffering hypothesis and the impact it has on female students.
