Abstract

This study examines gungjung hakmu (宮中鶴舞, court crane dance) from a Confucian perspective, arguing that court dance functioned not merely as an artistic expression but as a practical arena for moral cultivation. Situated within the Joseon dynasty’s system of ritual and music (yeak, 禮樂), gungjung hakmu embodies the ideal character and moral virtues of the Confucian gentleman (junzi, 君子), physically enacting such values as ritual propriety (ye, 禮), benevolence (in, 仁), and self-restraint through the principle of overcoming the self and returning to ritual (geukgi bokrye, 克己復禮). Focusing on representative dance movements—such as the two-step southern advance, outward and circular turns, facing north, pecking movements and rising, inward and outward gazes, circling together, facing one another, and repeated rotations—this study analyzes how these bodily forms symbolically articulate key Confucian concepts of restraint, self-reflection, and harmony. Through disciplined bodily movement, gungjung hakmu visualizes the moral authority of kingship and the ethical order of the community, functioning as a corporeal realization of the Confucian aesthetic principle of the unity of ritual and music (yeak ilchi, 禮樂一致). Although gungjung hakmu is today transmitted largely as a formal heritage, a reexamination of its accumulated moral and ethical dimensions is required. By analyzing its symbolism and theories of moral cultivation, this study explores the relationship between Confucian aesthetics and human self-cultivation, and seeks to illuminate anew the philosophical significance and humanistic potential of Korean court dance.
