Abstract
This study presents the development and implementation process of “Ecology, Environment, and Humanity,” a general education course designed to teach ecological and environmental history at the college level. Moving beyond the limitations of conventional environmental history research that has understood the interaction between nature and humans as separate domains, this study introduces an integrated ecological perspective encompassing human-nonhuman, West-East, and past-present dimensions. The course aims to help students understand the current global situation—marked by climate crisis and diverse ecological challenges—within a broader historical context spanning Eastern and Western civilizations, and to explore practical pathways toward sustainable living for humans, often labeled as destroyers of the environment. The global outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020 significantly heightened public awareness of ecological issues, making the introduction of environmental history as a general education course for college students in their early twenties a timely and meaningful educational initiative. Given the vast scope of ecological and environmental studies, careful selection and concentration of themes were essential to provide an effective learning experience suitable for general education. Accordingly, the course was organized around four major themes identified as having exerted the greatest influence on human history: climate, agriculture, disease, and forest and animals. Each theme was examined through specific case studies from Western, Eastern, and Korean history from a comparative perspective, and was designed to cultivate students’ ecological sensitivity and practical competence through theoretical instruction, on-campus ecological field trips, and team-based action projects. By providing a detailed description of the course structure and key content areas, this study seeks to offer practical reference materials for educators developing similar courses in the future. Ultimately, this course holds significance as an integrated model of college general education that reinterprets the relationship between humanity and nature through the lens of ecological and environmental history, and enables students to recognize the current ecological crisis as both a subject of historical reflection and a challenge requiring practical action.
