Abstract
This paper reexamines Hong Il-sik’s theory of cultural territoriality as a mechanism for world peace, focusing on cultural de-bordering. Traditional territorial concepts, secured through military and economic hard power, have historically been the main cause of wars. As an alternative, cultural territoriality is proposed as a territory based on soft power—history and culture—built on attraction and goodwill rather than coercion. The spread of culture, exemplified by the Korean Wave (Hallyu), enhances national branding, generates industrial benefits, and fosters peaceful relations by sharing positive cultural values globally. The modes of cultural diffusion have shifted from one-way legacy media to interactive, internet-based platforms. Models of consumer behavior evolved from AIDMA to AISAS and SIPS, where audiences actively search, participate, and share, becoming agents of cultural expansion. This accelerates cultural de-bordering and builds global empathy. Cultural territoriality critiques the coercive spread of cultural imperialism and emphasizes cultural nationalism, where each culture maintains its uniqueness while achieving harmony. Ultimately, it aims for cultural cosmopolitanism, overcoming repeated cycles of war and misfortune, and offering a new paradigm for peaceful coexistence.
