Abstract

This study examines the forms of solidarity revealed in the “Namtaeryeong Battle,” a protest that took place at Namtaeryeong in December 2024. Although initiated by farmers, the event became a space where women, sexual minorities, and other diverse bodies moved across online and offline space to enact a shared sense of being-with. Drawing on Butler’s notion of the emergence of “bodies without rights” and Ferguson’s concept of “presence,” the study explores the possibilities of solidarity manifested in this event. The unintended isolation of protesters at Namtaeryeong, combined with their pre-existing positionality within the impeachment movement, formed the basis of the protest’s dynamics. The Namtaeryeong Battle demonstrates three dimensions of solidarity: first, affective resonance with endangered bodies can serve as a foundation for collective action; second, physical encounters on site can generate cross-ideological alliances beyond established political lines; and third, the shared experience of pain and violence can cultivate political comradeship and sustained solidarity with marginalized groups.
