청소년 도움행동으로서 자원봉사와 기부활동의 참여요인: 초·중·고등학생 세집단의 비교

Explanatory factors in volunteering and domination as forms of helping behaviors amongst elementary, middle, and high school students

이 연구는 청소년들의 도움행동의 원인을 알아보기 위해 자원봉사와 기부활동에 주목하고 그 원인들로 사회인구학적 요인, 개인동기요인, 사회자본요인 및 상황기회요인들이 과연 어떻게 차별적인지, 그리고 그 원인들의 작용이 초등학생, 중학생, 고등학생 별로 어떻게 다른지 살펴보았다. 전국의 청소년 7,052명을 조사한 결과 사회자본요인을 보면 조직사회자본이 자원봉사와 기부활동 모두에 있어서 그리고 초·중·고등학생 모두에서 가장 중요한 요인이라는 것을 제시했다. 개인동기요인에서는 이기적 동기요인 중 도움시 즐거움이, 그리고 감정이입과 개인규범이 그 영향력이 유의미했다. 자원봉사의 경우 초등학생에서는 도움시 즐거움이, 고등학생에서는 감정이입과 개인규범이 주요 요인으로 나타나 학령에 따라 차이를 보였고, 기부활동의 경우는 그와 상반되게 초등학생에서는 감정이입과 개인규범이, 그리고 고등학생에서는 도움시 즐거움이 주요 요인으로 제시되었다. 사회인구학적 요인을 보면 남성보다는 여성이 자원봉사와 기부활동 모두를 더 많이 하는 것으로 나타났고 초등학생은 기부를, 고등학생은 자원봉사를 더 하는 차이를 보였으며 학령별 내에서도 연령에 따른 차이가 있었으나 경제수준과 종교는 기부활동에서만 어느 정도 중요했다. 상황기회요인을 보면 자원봉사와 기부 모두에서 중요했지만 기부에 있어서는 돕는 누군가가 주변에 있는지 그리고 돕고자 하는 상대가 누구인지가 상대적으로 중요했지만 자원봉사에서는 그 외 접근성이나 편리성 등의 기회요인이 더 중요한 것으로 나타났다. 상황기회요인은 학령별로도 차이를 보여 자원봉사와 기부활동 모두에서 고등학생보다는 초등학생에게서 더 중요하게 작용하는 것으로 나타났다. 이 결과에 따른 정책적 함의를 논의한다.

Abstract

This study explores explanatory factors in helping behaviors amongst youth, and in doing so, applied socio-demographic, individual motivation, social capital, and situational opportunity factors to both volunteering and domination behaviors. This study also examines how the effects of the above are different amongst elementary, middle, and high school students. Results from data taken from 7,052 students nationwide, show that social capital levels in affiliated organizations are the most powerful factor in explaining both volunteering and domination amongst all elementary, middle, and high school students. In terms of individual motivation factors, it is shown to have a significant impact in helping behaviors, such as egoistic factors, empathy, and individual norms. However, there were differences across groups, in that pleasure derived from helping behaviors were important in elementary school students' volunteering activities, whilst empathy and individual norms were important in high school students' volunteering. In contrasts, it was found that pleasure derived from helping behaviors were important in high school students' domination, while empathy and individual norms were important in elementary school students' domination. In terms of socio-demographic factors, it was shown that males exhibited higher levels in both volunteer and domination than females. It was also shown that elementary school students exhibited higher levels in domination, while high school students exhibited higher levels in volunteering. Economic level and religion had significant influences in domination. In terms of situational opportunity factors, the by-stander effect and recipient characteristics are important in domination, while opportunity factors such as accessibility and convenience are important in volunteering. In addition, it was found that the effects of these factors are different across the three groups, in that they are more significant in elementary school students than high school students in terms of both volunteering and domination. Based on these above mentioned empirical results, a number of possible policy implications are discussed.
