본 연구는 애정전기소설에 등장하는 기녀 인물이 감정적·윤리적 평가의 대상에 머무르지 않고, 관계 형성–갈등 전개–결말 형성의 핵심 국면에 반복적으로 배치되는 존재임을 밝히는 데 목적을 둔다. 기존 연구가 기녀의 정절이나 도덕성에 주목해 인물의 기능을 제한적으로 해석해 온 데 비해, 본고는 기녀의 위치 변화가 서사 전개와 결말 구조에 어떻게 관여하는지를 구조적으로 검토한다. <월단단>, <주생전>, <옥단춘전>을 분석한 결과, 세 작품은 각각 관계의 유예와 중단, 이탈과 자기 종결, 유지와 승인이라는 상이한 결말 유형을 보인다. 그러나 이러한 차이는 기녀의 성향이 아니라, 승인 조건-관계의 지속 가능성, 외부 질서와의 조율, 제도적 귀속의 가능성-이 어떻게 충족되거나 차단되는가에 따라 형성된다. 기녀는 관계의 출발과 갈등 국면에서 핵심적 위치를 점하지만, 최종 귀속 여부는 서사가 구성한 승인 구조 속에서 분기된다. 본 연구는 이를 통해 기녀 인물을 관계·질서·승인 양상이 드러나는 핵심 지점으로 재위치화하고자 한다.
Abstract
This study investigates the narrative agency and structural positions of ginyeo (female entertainers) in love-based Jeongi novels, focusing on Woldandan, Jusaengjeon, and Okdanchunjeon. Rather than treating ginyeo as marginal figures defined by morality or emotional sincerity, the analysis reveals their active roles in relationship formation, conflict mediation, and narrative conclusion. The comparative approach identifies three distinct ending modalities—postponement or interruption, voluntary withdrawal, and formal approval—each shaped by unique structural conditions such as the possibility of maintaining the relationship, external mediation, and institutional support. Findings indicate that the narrative outcome for ginyeo figures is determined less by personal virtue than by the approval mechanisms embedded in each text. This perspective reframes ginyeo agency as a structural pivot in the plot, foregrounding how love-based Jeongi novels negotiate the inclusion, exclusion, and agency of lower-class women through narrative practice. The study thus proposes a new framework for understanding relational structures and approval conditions as key determinants of narrative agency for ginyeo figures.
