청소년 지도자의 청소년 성소수자 지원사업 경험

UN 인권 이사회의 지속적인 포괄적 차별금지법 제정 권고 등 우리 사회는 성소수자가 당면한 삶과 어려움을 조명해야 할 필요성을 지속적으로 마주하고 있다. 이처럼 만연한 사회적 차별과 편견으로 청소년 성소수자는 상담 등 공공 서비스를 이용하는 것에 대한 거부감을 보고하고 있다. 이에 청소년 성소수자 지원에 있어 청소년 지도자가 나아가야 할 방향을 모색하기 위해, 본 연구는 공공 영역에서 청소년 성소수자 지원 사업을 운영하는 청소년 지도자의 경험을 심층적으로 이해하고자 하였다. 따라서 1년 이상 청소년 성소수자 지원 사업에 종사한 6명의 청소년 지도자를 대상으로 반구조화된 심층 면접을 실시하였다. Giorgi의 현상학적 질적 분석 방법으로 분석한 결과, 총 119개의 의미단위, 3개의 대주제, 10개의 중주제, 28개의 소주제가 도출되었다. 청소년 지도자는 청소년 성소수자를 지원하는 과정에서 관계맺음의 어려움, 불안정하고 지지적이지 않은 환경 등으로 어려움을 경험하기도 하였지만, 이러한 경험들을 통해 성장과 보람을 느끼고 있었다. 본 연구는 이러한 연구 결과를 토대로 한국에서 청소년 성소수자 지원이 원활하게 이뤄지기 위해 요구되는 사회구조적 및 개인 내적인 변화와 역량을 명료화 하였다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 연구 결과를 토대로 향후 청소년 성소수자를 원활히 지원하기 위한 시사점을 논의하였다.
Abstract
Korean society is facing a need to spotlight the lives and difficulties of sexual minorities, which has been spurred on by increased social awareness of such issues. There are a number of prime movers behind this, one example amongst many is the he UN's pressure for comprehensive anti-discrimination legislation to be enacted by the Korean government. Due to prevalent discrimination and biases in Korean society, sexual minority youth (SMY) have reported reluctance in utilizing public services like counseling services under this social and legislative climate. Therefore, this study aims to develop a deeper understanding of the experience of youth workers managing a government project supporting SMY in the public sphere. Semi-constructed, in-depth interviews were conducted with six participants who have worked on projects supporting sexual minority youth for more than one year. The results were analyzed based on the Giorgi’s phenomenological qualitative approach, and 3 categories, 10 themes, 28 sub-themes, and 119 meaning units emerged. Even though the participants experienced difficulties supporting sexual minority youth due to challenges in developing relationships with SMY and also due to unstable and unsupportive working conditions, they have grown in expertise and developed a sense of pride through these experiences. Moreover, they elucidated much needed structural and individual changes and competencies through these experiences; which leave them better placed to support SMY in Korean society at large. Based on these findings, a number of recommendations and future directions were discussed to better and more actively support sexual minority youth.
