Abstract

This paper focuses on the newly discovered lyric materials. It introduces the characteristics and patterns of 20 lyrics from 40 gyubang gasa (lyrics written by women) collected by Yi Ju-Hong in the Gyeongbuk province from the 1960s to 1970s. Yi’s collection of lyric materials is very valuable since the materials were collected at random with precise information of the origin or the place of collection. The collection includes common lyrics such as ‘Bonguibyeolgara’ found in various places, newly written lyrics like ‘Jabuchyantyuga’, and lyrics written or transcribed by men such as ‘Hyosyeonggasajip’. It is significant in that Yi’s collection includes not only previously found common lyrics but also common lyrics in different versions and all new lyrics, thus being a great addition to the existing lyric materials. Furthermore, Yi’s collection raises numerous issues in lyric studies as it contains lyrics supposedly written or transcribed by men providing researchers an opportunity to consider the role and function of men in gyubang gasa and certain lyrics that are indistinguishable with letters dealing with different and various themes. Aside from the characteristics and patterns of lyrics, there are materials written on scrolls or on a paper soaked in perilla oil to prevent tear. There is even a lyric transcribed on a paper with 15cm head margin in order to prevent the loss of the content as it is common for the top part of the paper to wear and tear first. Through such various forms of documentation, Yi’s collection provides valuable information on how lyrics were passed on. As this is the first attempt to introduce and analyze Yi Ju-Hong’s collection of gasa materials by focusing on 20 lyrics among 40 materials, further researches will follow to introduce the characteristics and patterns of the rest of the materials.
