Abstract
Most people today dream of breaking away from the daily routine. They set out on a weekend or holiday outing to scenic spots and places of historic interest. Back in the Chosun Dynasty, people also dreamed of the same. For them, the outing was not such an easy undertaking. Nonetheless, there were people who would dare to hit the pike. Their stories were passed on from mouth to mouth or in writing, and people came to know about travel destinations. When they craved travels but could not leave daily lives, they looked for ways of substituting travels and improvised a game, NamSeungDo. The game took one step forward and became ‘ShangYoungDo’ , which remained similar to its earlier version in form and game rules but now pursued a journey into the self and the advancement of learning. ShangYounDo means a game board on which drinking and poetry composition take place. Associated with ShangYoungDo were travel destinations in China or those places that appeared in Chinese literature. These destinations either exist in reality or are imagined. They were known to be associated with some poetry, or some verses were written about them. Thus, a traveler on the game board of ShangYoungDo was required to compose a verse about a destination when he arrived at the place on the board. It was a sophisticated game, combining play and education. It is also worth a study in diverse perspectives from history to culture, ideology and geography. Therefore, the author of this paper tried, as a first step toward the study of ShangYoungDo, to compare and analyze the existing materials on ShangYoungDo. Of the six items that exist and are relevant to ShangYoungDo, five legible items were studied for structure and contents. The following are the findings of the study. They have something in common. First, the same travel destinations appear in the different versions of ShangYoungDo. Second, these places are arranged in the same order. And third, pieces move in the same direction on the game board, namely having the same travel course. They also have differences. First, ‘ShangYoungDoBo’, ‘ShangYoungDoSeol’, and ‘ShangYoungDoGo’ take a form of book, whereas ShangYoungDo housed in Daejeon History Museum and another version of ShangYoungDo housed in Korea Univsersity a form of game board. Second, ShangYoungDoBo, ShangYoungDoSeol, ShangYoungDoGo, and ShangYoungDo housed in Korea University are more likely to serve as a manual, whereas ShangYoungDo housed in Daejeon History Museum more likely to serve as a game board. Third, a perfect travel game can be played in cases of ShangYoungDoBo and ShangYoungDo housed in Korea University in themselves, whereas in cases of ShangYoungDoSeol, ShangYoungDoGo, and ShangYoungDo housed in Daejeon History Museum, a game can be played only when they are matched with a game board or manual. Of the versions given in the form of book, ShangYoungDoBo and ShangYoungDoSeol include the list of Chinese books as sources and bibliography for background knowledge and information necessary for the game, whereas ShangYoungDoGo utilizes both Chinese and Korean books. The following were concluded after the different versions were compared. First, ShangYoungDoBo is a complete set of book, comprising procedure for playing, explanations, and a small game board. Second, ShangYoungDoSeol is a handbook for those travel destinations that appear in ShangYoungDo. Third, ShangYoungDoGo is a information book, providing clues for background knowledge necessary for playing. Fourth, ShangYoungDo housed in Daejeon History Museum is a game board and contains game rules for playing. And finally, ShangYoungDo housed in Korea University is also a complete set, just like ShangYoungDoBo, including procedure for playing, explanations, and a small game board on a single board, but in a simpler format. ShangYoungDo is worth a study in diverse perspectives from entertainment to literature, ideology and geography. It's an empirical material to make it possible to feel out a culture of enjoying travels on a game board as a form of literary entertainment in the nobility. Further studies are expected in the future, and this study has a significance in the sense that it will serve as basic data for future studies, examples of rediscovering long-forgotten heritage, and a reference for studies into traditional folk culture of living. Also expected is the value of original assets as a traditional form of entertainment can be modernized and utilized in various cultural industry sectors.
