양반 종족촌락의 지명에 나타난 사회적 공간의 위계와 구별짓기 -청도 신촌의 사례-
A Study of Place Names Representing Socio-Spatial Hierarchy and Distinction in a Village with Yangban Lineage: A Case of Sinchon in Cheongdo County

이 논문은 밀양 박씨들이 15세기 초부터 거주해온 청도 신촌의 지명을 사회공간적 구성의 맥락에서 그 공간적 위계와 구별짓기를 검토하는 데 그 목적을 두었다. 이를 구체적으로 접근하기 위해 연구자는 지명이 갖는 영토적 장소성, 포괄적 관계성, 사회적 구별짓기와 명성드러내기 등의 개념적 준거틀이 어떻게 그들의 사회적 지위, 유교적 관념, 사회관계, 등과 관련하면서 양반의 문화적 지표로서 중요한 역할을 하는지를 고찰하였다. 첫째, 마을지명과 언설은 세거지의 영역화 과정을 나타낸다. 지명은 분파된 종족집단의 공간적 위치와 선조에 대한 역사적 기억, 그리고 유교적 실천 등이 결합되어 사회⋅경제적 지위와 관련하였다. 마을의 공간적 위상관계를 나타내주는 지명은 전도된 사회공간적 위계를 재현하였다. 이러한 사례는 종족집단이 기억사를 정치자원화하는 과정에서 다양한 사회계급들 사이에 차별화된 상대적 위치정하기의 전략을 행함으로써 생산된 결과라 할 수 있다. 둘째, 특히 각 양반 가문들의 격, 산송문제, 당론 등은 상이한 사회공간적 스케일을 절합시키는 중요한 요인이 되었다. 그들이 지명을 통해 장소만들기를 하는 역사적 과정에는 촌락과 다른 공간적 스케일, 즉 묘소나 지역사회 등이 관련되었다. 상이한 문중 사이에 선조 묘소를 두고 벌어진 산송시비는 도 경계를 넘어선 지역에 청도면 이라는 지명창출에 영향을 주었다. 명명된 지명은 경제적⋅정치적⋅문화적 체계와 관련한 가운데 문화⋅정치적 경합과 갈등으로 야기된 다양한 상황에 따라 확장되어 지역사회, 국가사회 등과 포괄적 관계 속에서 영토적 장소로 의미재현되었다. 셋째, 촌락민들은 지명을 통해 양반과 비양반의 사회적 구별짓기를 하면서 위계적인 사회적 공간 관계를 구성하였다. 가문간의 경합은 그들이 살아온 마을을 넘어서 ‘산동’과 ‘산서’라는 미시 지역명을 두고 서로가 명성을 드러내는 과정과 관련한다. 그들이 명명한 지명은 당론, 선조에 대한 의식, 예법, 문한 등과 마찬가지로 상징적 자본으로서 명문사족의 명성을 나타내는 상징적 표지이다.
Abstract
The study analyzed spatial hierarchy and distinction via toponymy of Sinchon village, based on the origin of the lineage group from 15th century ancestors in terms of social and spatial context. Towards this end, we examined conceptual frames of reference based on territorial location, comprehensive relationships, social differentiation and mode of reputation correlated with social status and Confucian ideas. These factors played an important role as a cultural indicator of the yangban in Cheongdo County. First, place names and their relationships represented the geographic localization of the village. These factors were related to social and economic status combined with spatial position based on lineage groups, and their historical memories of ancestors and practices under Confucian ideology. The place names of spatial topology were represented by a complete reversal in social hierarchy in the village, suggesting that villagers practiced the relevant strategy between different social classes. Second, the class status, litigation of ancestral tombs, and traditional factions represented crucial factors in conjunction with different social and spatial scales. Diverse spatial scales such as villages, ancestral graves, and micro-regional societies correlated with the spatialization of historical memory by the lineage members. The litigation of ancestral tombs between different lineages influenced the designation of Cheongdo- myeon located at the border between Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gyeongsangnam-do. Place names represent territorial locations according to historical circumstances based on cultural and political competitiveness, and comprehensive and conflicting relationships with communities, national societies and others. Third, villagers have constructed hierarchical relationships of social space based on place names, practice of social distinctions between Yangban and non-Yangban cultures. The villagers have attempted to salvage their reputations at the level of micro-societies, Sandong and Sanseo. The place names are socio-linguistic markers that represent symbolic capitals of local elite traced to traditional lineages, ancestral rites, and Confucian tastes.
