이 글은 예용해 선생(芮庸海 1929~1995)이 생전에 조사해 놓은 무형문화재(무형유산)에 관한 자료를 전6권의 『예용해전집』(대원사, 1997, 이하 전집)을 중심으로 분석해 보는 데 목적을 둔다. 선생의 생전에 걸친 전통 예능 보전과 부흥의 헌신적 노력을 역사적인 관점에서 되돌아보려 한다. 예용해 선생은 한국일보의 기자, 문화부장, 논설위원으로 활동했지만 예사 언론인들과는 다른 길을 걸어온 분이다. 문화의 계몽과 보전 운동, 문화의 선양과 정체성을 세우는 데 시종 참여하고 앞장 선 업적이 특히 주목되고, 이런 측면에서 높이 평가할 수 있는 대표적인 지성인이다. 선생은 일상문화 가운데 개성적인 표현력이 살아 있고, 정신적인 정체성이 분명한, ‘한국인으로서의 삶’을 가치 있게 여겼다. 역설적으로 말하면, 이러한 삶이 내재되어 온 것이 한국의 무형문화라고 인식했다. 전통적인 예능 기법과 공예 기술을 보전하고 부흥시켜야 하는 것은, 한국인의 개성과 정체성 있는 삶을 위한, 진정성 있는 목표라는 논리를 설파했다. 선생은 혼란한 시대에 우리 문화의 선도자였다.
Abstract
This article analyzes the six-volume Ye Yong-hae Complete Works(Daewonsa, 1997) compiled by Ye Yong-hae(1929-1995) during his lifetime. It examines his dedicated efforts to preserve and revive traditional performing arts throughout his life from a historical perspective. Ye Yong-hae served as a reporter, culture editor, and editorial writer for the HankookIlbo, but he followed a different path than typical journalists. His consistent participation and leadership in cultural enlightenment and preservation movements, as well as in promoting and establishing cultural identity, are particularly noteworthy, and he is a representative intellectual worthy of high praise in this regard. He valued "Korean life," characterized by individualistic expression and a clear spiritual identity within everyday culture. Paradoxically, he recognized that this life, inherent in Korean intangible culture, represented its very essence. He argued that preserving and reviving traditional performing arts and crafts was a genuine goal, a path toward a life of individuality and identity for Koreans. He was a leader of our culture during a time of turmoil.
