Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the main activities of the global Korean business networks, such as the World-OKTA (Overseas Koreans Traders Associations) Convention, the World Korean Business Leaders Convention and the World Korean Business Convention, and also to identify the implications for further development. Existing research and relevant data from the homepages of the World-OKTA, the World Federation of Korean Association of Commerce, as well as Overseas Koreans Foundation have been examined. The main contents of the research are as follows. First, the overseas Koreans' society has established economic organizations earlier than government agencies and has been hosting the annual Korean business conventions. The representatives of such economic organizations as the World-OKTA and the World Federation of Korean Association of Commerce have been hosting business conventions since 1996. Second, being a governmental organization, Overseas Koreans Foundation has been hosting the World Korean Business Conventions since 2002, but the participation of overseas Korean businessmen is decreasing gradually. Moreover, the companies participating in them are mainly from the United States of America, China and Japan, including South Korea. This shows that there is a certain limit in sharing business information with Korean business circles that are engaged in economic activities in various countries or in acquiring information for the advancement of Korean companies in overseas markets. Implications for the further development of global Korean business network are as follows. First, Korean business convention, which is currently being held by various organizations, should be organized in an integrated way at least once every four years. Second, regional conventions, such as Global Korean Business Convention in China, Asia Korean Business Convention, and Convention of Korean-American Chamber of Commerce should be revitalized. Regional Korean business conventions will contribute to strengthening exchanges between Korean business and domestic companies, between home countries and countries of their residence, as well as promote cooperations among Korean business circles. Third, by actively utilizing online space, such as www.hansang.net operated by Overseas Koreans Foundation, Korean business circles in various countries should share business information and establish networks.
