초록

Piaohailu, a record of drifting across the sea, is the diary of a Korean official, Choi Bu[1454-1504] who, caught in a storm off Jeju, Korea in 1488 while returning home for mourning his father's death together with his 42 men, drifted in his boat to the coast of China. He recorded the daily adventures and endeavors of a castaway all the way across China until he and his entourage returned home alive. While he traveled as a castaway for almost half a year in a foreign country, his words and behaviors attracted a lot of attention. His wide range of knowledge from reading, especially in Confucianism overshadowed those of the then Chinese officials and civilians, exemplifying himself a true Confucian scholar: In a sense, he seems much more of a Confucian than Chinese ones. This story is an indicative in this regard.
