Abstract

Since the United States and Korean Governments decided the deployment of the THAAD system on the Korean Peninsula, Russia has expressed deep concern about the THAAD. In this regard, there are some points to consider. First, Russia considers the deployment of the THAAD system on the Korean peninsula as a part of the US global MD system, because the ground-based missile defense system has been already deployed in Romania. Second, since the first inauguration of president Putin, the conflict between the US and Russia has increased, which has exacerbated distrust between the two governments. The conflict in the Europe has an impact on Russia's reaction to the strengthening of the US forces in the North-eastern Asia. Third, Russia's response to the deployment of THAAD on the Korean peninsula will be led to the strengthening of partnerships with neighboring countries, including China and North Korea. Forth, Russia will not immediately change her attitude on the north Korean nuclear issue. Because Russia needs cooperation with Korea and Japan in order to achieve policy objectives concerning the development of the Far East region.
